Lee’s Review of The Augmented: The Awakening

The Augmented: The Awakening

By Mitchell Hill

Back Cover Synopsis:

Follow The Brothers on their bloody journey for vengeance as they traverse a land kept from them. Journey with them, as they come to terms with their new, magically Augmented limbs.

Born in war, Augmented in death.

Meet Broax and Akii. Twins, opposite in almost every way. United by their mother’s murder.

Born during the sacking of their town, their father only just managed to get them out alive. Raised in isolation, their fighting skills were honed as war raged around them. Coming of age, they find out their mother made the ultimate sacrifice for them.

This sets in motion their journey for bloody revenge; but vengeance never quite goes to plan.

Death finds them at their first battle, but this is only the beginning. Reborn at the hands of a magiik, they discover they’ve been Augmented with new limbs. More powerful than sword and steel, vengeance is back on.

Carving their way through the land, they discover they’re embroiled in something much bigger than just their revenge…

Lee’s Review: Compelling action fantasy about two brothers who must grapple with new abilities - and each other.

What I Liked:

The dynamic of the brothers was by far the best part of the story.  Borax, the hulking big man with a quick temper, and Akii, with fast reflexes and a big ego, are nicely contrasted throughout the story.  What is certain throughout the book is that Borax and Akii have each other’s backs no matter what, despite their differences.  The brothers also do their best to keep the other brother’s flaws in check and will not hesitate to call out if necessary.

The tragic backstory of Strax, the father, saving the twin brothers as babies was very compelling!  Strax is a fascinating character who loves his sons deeply but still struggles with the loss of the boy’s mother.

There is a wide cast of supporting characters that add much flavor to the story.  In the beginning, the brother’s journey is contrasted by four unique Lords who are desperately trying to figure out how to combat the evil Straven who have invaded the kingdom of Vestaii.

The “magiik” Miryze, who gives the brothers their powers, is an appropriately mysterious figure who may or may not have Broax and Akii’s best interests at heart, and who may have given the brothers their augmented limbs for his own reasons.  An interesting character to read about for sure.

Constructive comments for future works from this author:

While the brother’s flaws were definitely present; and Broax was shown to realize how his bloodlust affects his judgment when fighting, I wish Akii’s ego was given more consequence just as much as Broax’s actions.

There’s a very quick scene where a woman shows up in Akii’s bed after a drunken night and is never heard from again.  The scene is played as a joke.  I personally felt the scene was distracting.

“Movie” Rating: R, for violence throughout, a sex scene early on, sporadic sexual references, and language throughout.

A Favorite Quote:

Borax: “Before you start, Akii, this fight isn’t ours and these people aren’t our responsibility.”

Akii: “Look around you.  This place is all but falling down.  These people took us in when we were babies and helped us.  We wouldn’t have survived without them.  The Straven have raped this land of food, coins and any form of hope that was left. We can make a difference here.”

Overall Review: If you’re an adult fan of fantasy, check out this exciting story about two brothers forged together while they fight to defend their lands!  Plenty of action and compelling characters!
